Congratulations to my Aunt Betty Copeland, the new Mayor of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania!!!!

NEVER underestimate the power of an 83-year-old African-American woman!!!! As a Democrat, she just beat the incumbent Republican Mayor by 31 votes out of 1,011 votes cast! I’m fairly certain that she’s both the first woman and the first African-American to be elected to the office in the borough’s history.

Democrat Betty Copeland won the Bridgeville mayoral race Tuesday night, defeating incumbent Pat DeBlasio by 31 votes, according to unofficial, but complete results.

As Bridgeville’s new mayor, Copeland, 83, will oversee the police department, declare states of emergency, and perform other duties that come with the office.

The citizens of Bridgeville, where we've had family serving the community since the mid-1920s, will be very well served. Aunt Betty enters public life in the footsteps of her late husband, my Great-Uncle Curtis Copeland Sr., who was himself a barrier-breaking public official.

Congratulations to Aunt Betty and to the citizens of Bridgeville. So glad I told my Uber driver to vote for you!

Update: Official Statement of Mayor-Elect Betty Copeland:

I would like to thank the people of Bridgeville for giving me the opportunity to serve them as Mayor. I will work diligently with the Borough Council, Borough Manager and the Chief of Police to make Bridgeville both a safe and prosperous community. In addition, I will be a Goodwill Ambassador for the businesses, local institutions, community services and the civic life of Bridgeville. I appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped make this possible. Thanks for your vote.

Betty Copeland — Mayor-Elect, Borough of Bridgeville, 11/08/2017
